In autumn the gold and orange forests of the region are full of mushrooms for you to pick.

The Winter Sports Centre on Mount Krzyzowa in Lidzbark Warminski has a ski lift, several of ski runs and a skate track, too.

Purdzkie Woods, situated south of Olsztyn, is an area of natural beauty and many lakes, making it a popular destination for hikers and cyclists. There are also a plenty of other trails around Olsztyn, Olsztynek, Gietrzwald and elsewhere.

arrowSightsee
A necessary visit is Frombork, the native town of world-renowned Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, and home to the famous Cathedral Hill with its 17th century organs and magnificent planetarium. Furthermore, we recommend sightseeing around Olsztyn with its Gothic castle, and Lidzbark Warminski with its bishop’s residence, often dubbed the “Wawel of the North”. Worth a visit is Orneta, with its beautiful Gothic church and old town hall.

arrowVisit the sanctuary of St Mary
Back in the late 19th century, Saint Mary appeared to two girls in Gietrzwald. Since that time, this place has had a cult status; drawing pilgrims to the church and to try the healing water from the miraculous spring.

arrowRide a horse
If you are keen on horse riding then you have to visit the town of Kadyny, where the state stud farm is located. Horseback riding is available to all and you can ride in a horse-drawn cart or carriage – a perfect way to get to know the picturesque countryside of Warmia.

arrowPlay golf
In Naterki near Gietrzwald is a 15-hole golf course to meet the desires of every golfer in this country where the sport is still in its infancy.

arrowHave an unusual cruise
Cruise along the Elblag Canal, which connects Elblag with Ostroda, and fully indulge yourself in the details of this astonishing construction. Listed as one of the most interesting attractions of the region and a masterpiece of 19th-century technology, it was designed to transport ships over a water level difference of 100 m. As a result, boats are able to ‘cruise’ part of their journey overland. Cruises start in Ostroda.

children BAMBINI
The castle in Frombork lures families to see their tournaments of knights in mediaeval clothing and armour. See their mock battles in the courtyard. Another great attraction is the open-air museum in Olsztyn, while a visit to the Museum of Beekeeping in Czerwonka may be a good idea too.
