Sightsee Make sure you don’t leave the Suwalszczyzna region without some sightseeing. Worthy of a visit is the small town of Sejny with its Basilica from the 17th century, the 19th-century Synagogue and the Saint Agatha Chapel from the 18th century. You may also consider a trip to Zelwa to see the open-air museum, known as the Regional House.
Kayak Augustow, often dubbed the “Venice of the North” or the “Summer Saloon of Country”, has become a mecca for kayakers since here you can find the starting point of the famous kayaking trail along the Augustowski Canal. Through Wigierski National Park winds another popular kayaking trail, called the Trail of Czarna Hancza.
Hike Suwalski Natural Park, Wigierski National Park and Augustowska Forest, like the entire region, are crisscrossed by a dense network of interesting hiking trails. While you hike along these trails, you can admire wild nature and observe some unique species of birds.
Cycle Well-marked biking trails enable you to explore some of the most beautiful natural and landscape sites around. The terrain is varied and gentle, challenging in places, making it suitable for beginners as well as for more advanced bikers.
Ride a horse There are plenty of places in the region where the beginner can ride under the watchful eye of qualified instructors, while experienced riders are bound to enjoy the large open areas that Suwalszczyzna offers. In addition, there are a variety of horse carriage rides available, including sleigh rides during the winter.
Fish The lakes teem with fish, such as: roach, eel, perch, pike, tench and bream. Some of the more rare species of fish in the region include whitefish and powan (especially in the lakes of Puszcza Augustowska).
Pick mushrooms and berries Every basket will be full of berries in the summer or wild mushrooms in the autumn.
ENFANTS
Children will love the mini zoo, located in Zielone Kamedulskie some 5 km from Suwalki. It is home to some curious animals, including several exotic ones, and it also showcases different machines once used for farming. Other attractions include: baking bread in an oven according to an old recipe, smoking meat in a smokehouse as well as tasting interesting dishes of ostrich meat.
