Mazury – západ (Mragowská jezera)

arrowSail
Mragowo is crossed by many water trails leading to Gizycko, Mikolajki, Ruciane-Nida, Ketrzyn and other well-known towns of the Masuria Lakeland. The long and narrow lakes of the area connect with the Great Masurian Lakes and other smaller lakes and rivers, forming good conditions for both sailing and canoeing.

arrowCanoe
The most popular water trail of Krutynia starts in Sorkwity, some ten kilometres west of Mragowo, and leading south to Babieta (Lakes Lampackie, Dluzec, Biale, Zyzdroj, Zdruzno, Mokre – about 50 km), and then on through Piska Forest (described in the Great Masurian Lakes section). There is also a nice, and shorter, canoe trail from Mragowo to Swieta Lipka (around 20 km)

arrowCycle and hike
Bikers have several trails to choose – around Lakes Salet and Juno (start in Mragowo, about 20 km), from Mragowo to Pilaki reserve (about 40 km) and many more. Most of these trails are also a good opportunity for hiking.

arrowRide on horseback
There are horse-riding centres are situated in Ketrzyn, Olsztyn and Sorkwity.

arrowExplore traces of WWII
Perhaps the most unusual attraction of the region is the Wolf’s Lair in Gierloz, close to Ketrzyn. This old headquarters was used by Hitler to carry out attacks on the Soviet Union in 1941, and was where in 1944 Col. Stauffenberg made his attempt to assassinate the fűher.

arrowSightseeing and visiting pilgrimage spots
One of the most attractive places is Swieta Lipka, with its imposing Baroque sanctuary luring both pilgrims and tourists. The Teutonic Knights castle in Ketrzyn and the castle of the Warmian bishops in Reszel are worth dropping in on too. Lesser known, but equally interesting, are the villages of Sorkwity (a beautiful palace, now a hotel), Barciany (Teutonic castle), Dzwierzuty (old Protestant church) and Lezany (a neo-Baroque palace, open to visitors).

arrowHave a trip to a museum
We recommend the open-air museum of bee keeping in Czerwonka, as well as the milling museum in an old mill in Besia.

arrowVisit one of the local festivals
The Country Picnic in Mragowo is one of the most popular events there, whose specific atmosphere attracts a lot of people (not necessarily fans of country or folk music). Other events organised in Mragowo include: the Cabaret Nights and the Festival of Culture of the Borderlands.

children DĚTI
Apart from water sports, children can learn horse riding in Ketrzyn, Sorkwity or Galkowo. The older ones will enjoy exploring the WWII bunkers in Gierloz.
