Sail This is a real paradise for sailors - the most popular destination seems to be Sztynort, with the Zenza tavern having acquired something of cult status among the sailing crews who flock there every night to drink, sing and have a good time. Mikolajki on the Lakes Mikolajskie and Talty, known as the “pearl of Masuria”, has an extensive marina and many places where you can eat fresh fish and drink beer. The other choice villages and towns are: Ruciane-Nida, Gizycko, Wegorzewo and Mragowo.
Cruise Those of you who do not feel like sailing yourself can choose a cruise from a wide range of boats from the Zegluga Mazurska company. Cruises start in Gizycko, Wegorzewo, Ruciane-Nida, Mikolajki and Rydzewo.
Canoe The region of Masuria offers many opportunities of canoeing and equipment rental. A spectacular canoe trip along the Krutynia River is a highly recommended attraction there, but there are also ten others of various lengths (10-110 km).
Hike Throughout the whole region you will find plenty of trails for hikers. Since many of them cross landscape parks, you will have an opportunity to admire the Masurian wildlife and picturesque countryside in close up.
Ride on horseback There are many ecotourist destinations and horse centres, many offering horse riding at reasonable prices.
Cycle Numerous bike trails run through the thick forests and beside the lakes, allowing you deeper into the region. Find its attractions and enjoy the beautiful landscapes. You have a variety of different trails around Gizycko, Mikolajki, Mragowo and Wegorzewo to choose from, but there are also many more possibilities.
Try ice sailing In winter this sport is becoming increasingly popular in Masuria. Schools and equipment rentals can be found in Mikolajki, Ogonki, Ryn and other places.
Swim and rest on the lake If you are looking for some relaxation and wish to spend your holiday in a less active way, then you will find excellent conditions to simply lie on the edge of a lake or paddle in the water.
Go sightseeing In the open-air museum in Olsztynek you will find a collection of folk architecture from the 18th and 19th century, including windmills, some peasant's cottages and timber houses as well as granaries and smithies with original interiors. Swieta Lipka, known for its many miracles and the imposing Baroque church and monastery complex, attracts both tourists and pilgrims. In summer it hosts organ concerts.
Explore Hitler’s wartime headquarters In the deep forests of Gierloz, close to Ketrzyn, is one of Hitler’s former military bases from World War II. From the so-called Wolf's Lair, the complex of bunkers hidden in the forest, the Germans planned and carried out their attack on the Soviet Union.
Visit the ancient castles In the Middle Ages the area of Masuria belonged to the Order of Teutonic Knights. Their fortresses can still be seen in Ketrzyn, Nidzica and Ryn. There are also other splendid castles in Reszel and Giżycko (Boyen Fortress, built in the XIX century).
Visit an animal reserve In Kadzidlowo you may experience face-to-face meetings with storks, beavers, deer, goats, wolves and wild horses in the privately run local animal reserve.
