Kampinos y la tierra de Lowicz

arrowHike or cycle
Over 150 km of hiking and bicycle paths can be found in the region of Lowicz, while the Kampinos Forest is crossed by some 360 km of biking trails. While in the Kampinos, remember to have a map and watch out carefully for the trail blazing, as it is easy to get lost. Remember that trails in the forest are well marked, but there are no bars or cafes, so it is best to take some food with you.

arrowCross-country ski
The beautiful woodlands of the Kampinos Forest give many possibilities for active leisure. There are no special skiing trails in the woods, but during the winter the hiking trails are used by cross-country skiers.

arrowHorse ride
The inside of the Kampinos Forest is forbidden to horse-riding, since the hooves destroy the forest bed, but there are many possibilities to ride on horse back around the Kampinos, such as in Lomianki, Dabrowa Lesna, Dabrowa Nowa, Kepa Kielpinska, Wilczeniec, Kampinos, Korfowe or Sianno.

arrowVisit Chopin’s birthplace
If a concert of Chopin’s music, held in a beautiful park, sounds good to you, then find time to visit Zelazowa Wola, a small village on the western edges of Kampinos Forest. Apart from the recitals, you can enjoy sightseeing around the modest but charming manor house where the composer was born, and then head for Brochow where you could visit a fortified church dating from the 16th century.

arrowEnjoy romantic residences and parks
Imagine a unique Arcadia with a sentimental-romantic English-style park founded in 1778, well, this is one of the greatest attractions of Lowicz Land. The village of Nieborow has a 17th-century grand palace with historic, lavishly restored interiors that is also worth seeing. Another handsome, however later residence, can be found in Walewice, where Maria Walewska, Napoleon’s mistress, lived.

arrowSightsee
Aside from the mansions already mentioned, there are plenty other attractions in the area, including Modlin with its huge castle ruins from the early 19th century and nearby Czerwinsk, beautifully set on the bank of the Vistula River and known for its ancient abbey and church. In Palmiry, you can visit the mausoleum of 2,000 Nazi victims, killed there in the period 1939-1941. To outbalance its gruesome atmosphere, step at one of the small but pleasant and interesting villages of the Kampinos Forest, like Czosnow, Lipkow or Kampinos.

arrowExplore the folk culture of this land
The region of Lowicz is known for its folk arts and crafts. The best time to admire the colourful striped costumes of Lowicz Land is during the Corpus Christi celebrations (on a Thursday in May or June). Examples of the region’s houses and all the items that went with them, including decorative and cloth elements, are displayed at the open-air museum in Maurzyce. There is another interesting, private museum of this type situated in Sromow.

arrowVisit Marian Sanctuary in Niepokalanow
If you are looking for a spiritual experience, then visit the sanctuary in Niepokalanow, one of the most important pilgrimage centres in Poland. Apart from the basilica, there is a large Franciscan monastery, founded in 1927 by St. Maksymilian Maria Kolbe, a Polish saint who died in Auschwitz when he gave his life to save another man.
